Climate change is one of the main factors causing dramatic scarcity of aquatic life in the Pilcomayo river basin. The Weenhayek communities of Villamontes started vegetable gardens in plots suffering from limited productivity, insufficient access to water and extreme temperatures during the summer. The experience was led by women, youth and indigenous children, who took responsibility for building the family orchards nearby their households. This initiative increased food security and promoted the recovery of traditional agro-ecological practices, diversifying supply and helping to overcome the crisis.
