Wirikuta is a sacred territory recognized internationally, due to its natural and cultural value, by UNESCO. It is also of great significance to the survival of the Wixarika (Huichol) Indigenous People. A comprehensive intervention has been carried out to protect the crucial pilgrimage location. The main aim has been to provide the Wixarika with legal, political and communicational tools to support the struggle against land grabbing and granting of mining concessions in their ancestral territories.
