VISUAL TOOL TO SUPPORT HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS

At the end of 2019, Trócaire carried out an internal study to document the ways in which the organisation has supported and continues to support criminalized Human Rights Defenders (HRDs). The aim was to draw lessons learnt and recommendations on five case studies from across the regions Trócaire works in (Honduras, Guatemala, Kenya, Myanmar and OPT/I): two of those cases were land and environmental human rights defenders and four of them included Women Human Rights Defenders.

One of the main requests coming out from the country offices was to have clear guidance on practical steps to take at different stages when supporting HRDs who are at risk and/or who have already suffered an attack. Thus, we came up with a practical visual tool that guides our country offices on what immediate, intermediate and ongoing support they can provide to better support HRDs.
