In today’s world, being a land and environmental defender can be dangerous, even fatal. The number of defenders killed yearly is alarming, but their story is only the tip of the iceberg. What we often don’t see is what happens before we get to the point of no return.

This Earth Day, we are uncovering the truth of what’s underneath the surface.

Uncovering the Hidden Iceberg presents new data from the ALLIED Data Working Group revealing alarming patterns of non-lethal attacks against indigenous peoples, land and environmental defenders. Documenting non-lethal attacks, including threats, harassment, smear campaigns, stigmatisation – often a precursor to lethal violence -  can help us prevent it before it’s too late.
