CAN COMPANIES BE PART OF THE SOLUTION? YES, UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS. JOIN THIS LAB SERIES TO LEARN MORE!
Food, beverage, and agriculture companies’ very business models are rooted in colonial systems that have deprived people of their rights for generations, thus contributing to worsening land inequality. Is it possible for companies to be part of the solution? Yes, under certain conditions - Oxfam and ILC argue in the “Doing business on uneven ground” briefing.
This Lab series is designed for civil society leaders and practitioners interested in exploring how a value chain approach may help address land inequality, and advance IPLC and small farmers’ interests. The first Lab took place on March 13 (see details below) and will be followed by two Labs diving into specific issues and case studies, including exchanges with representatives from the private sector.

DOWLOAD THE BRIEFING “DOING BUSINESS ON UNEVEN GROUND”
DURING THE FIRST LAB WE DID...
- Get to know what a value chain approach is and what are the sources of leverage.
- Understand why and when it may be strategic for your organisation to engage with the private sector.
- Explore different types of engagement (campaigns, dialogues, negotiations, joint initiatives, etc.), their risks and risk mitigation tactics.
We learned from colleagues across 3 continents who have been engaging and challenging companies on their policies and practices on land issues:
- Gustavo Ferroni, Rural Justice & Development lead, Oxfam Brasil
- Emmanuel Mlaka, Executive Director of Land Governance Alliance (LAGA), Malawi
- Asisah Man, Land Governance Coordinator, Oxfam in Cambodia
With comments from:
- Chloe Christman Cole, Lead author of the briefing, Oxfam
- Stephanie Burgos, Key contributor to the briefing, Oxfam
The Lab was moderated by Yonas Mekonen, National Land Coalition initiative Global Coordinator, ILC.
