Rights Based Conservation of Indigenous Peoples
The Interlearning Program on Rights-Based Conversation brings together Indigenous youth, men and women and land and territorial defenders through a combination of virtual and in-person learning exchanges. With intentions to strengthen the capacities of ILC members and partners in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) to develop rights-based conservation agendas, the programme focuses on dialogue, deepened learning, and engagement of local actors to address biodiversity loss and climate change.
What is rights-based conservation?
An approach that integrates human rights — territorial, cultural, and effective participation rights — as the fundamental basis of any ecosystem conservation strategy, recognizing different knowledge systems as equal and acknowledging that environmental protection and social justice are interdependent."
Key Objectives
- Strengthen capacities of ILC LAC members in biodiversity conservation efforts
- Facilitate an environment for dialogue and interlearning among members in Peru
- Promote the development of both a regional and national agenda to influence key challenges in conservation processes
who is participating?
- Organisations from the Platform for Responsible Land Governance - CNT Peru
- Indigenous organisation representatives from Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru
- Organisations from the Regional Platform of Indigenous Peoples
- Youth from the Somos Tierra y Territorio movement
what does the learning path look like?
Participants from Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru will engage in a cycle of five virtual modules with technical specialists. Courses will explore rights-based conservation for Indigenous peoples, protection of Indigenous territories, bioeconomy, carbon credits, and Indigenous territorial governance.
a. National meeting in Ucayali, Peru to develop a national conservation agenda.
b. Field visits in Peru led by IBC & CONAP. Participants will visit the Bajo Putumayo Communal Reserve and other initiatives focused on land titling, community monitoring, bioeconomy, and private conservation areas.
c. Field visit in Colombia. Participants will visit the Regional Indigenous Council of Cauca (CRIC) to explore the role of the Indigenous Guard in territorial defense, autonomy, and climate action.
Building on the previous two components, this final forum, led by CNT and the Regional Platform of Indigenous Peoples, will develop both a national and regional agenda.
