Land Inequality: Framing Document

Members of the ILC are concerned about land inequality, a central issue to the policies and practices that they seek to improve and reform.

Yet, very little data exists to help us understand what the trends on land inequality are, as well as the complex and inter-related linkages between land inequality and wider inequalities.

In response, ILC is coordinating the Land Inequality Research Initiative. 
It's aim is to provide evidence and analysis needed to better understand the nature of land inequality worldwide.  The initiative will  develop a total of 18 papers, including a synthesis report and manifesto on land inequality for ILC members to use in their advocacy work.

The first paper, a framing document, authored by Marc Wegerif and Arantxa Guereña, launches the series and aims to: 

1. define how to approach the complexities of land inequality
2. identify a coherent framework for research and action
3. suggest research themes and questions
4. guide the next phases of the research initiative

Authors

Arantxa Guereña
Arantxa Guereña is an agricultural engineer specialized in development and environmental issues with a focus on land and human rights, sustainable rural livelihoods and gender issues. She has worked for more than twenty years with international development agencies in Latin America. She currently works as a freelance researcher and also monitors and evaluates development projects. 

Dr. Marc C. A. Wegerif
Marc Wegerif is a research fellow at the Human Economy Programme, University of Pretoria and holds a Doctorate from Wageningen University. He has over 30 years experience working with development and human rights issues, focusing on food systems and land and agrarian reforms. He has worked in South Africa and internationally and extended from local project implementation to national and international policy and advocacy.
