CAMEROON REPORT ON LAND IN THE SDGS
Main takeaways
According to data centralised and generated through LANDex:
- The considerable support provided to family farmers, in the form of technical assistance and financial support, give Cameroon its two highest scores for SDG 2: Zero SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.
- One of its lowest scores comes from SDG 5: Gender Equality, underlining the fact that women, and in particular rural and Indigenous women in Cameroon, still face significant challenges and remain disadvantaged in their land rights as they compare to those of men.
- The lowest SDG score in Cameroon was given to SDG17: Partnerships for the Goal, indicating that in Cameroon, the State has not set up a multi-stakeholder platform to address issues of land governance and that public input is sought only to a minimal extent when rural land use plans are developed.
- A lack of transparency in decision-making processes translates into concerns on SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, underlining challenges in accessing data and information on the situation of human rights defenders, including Indigenous, land and environmental defenders
ABOUT THE REPORT
This report examines various sources of information and data that inform our understanding of progress towards people-centered land governance in the context of the SDGs in Cameroon.
The report will showcase data made available through ILC's global land monitoring tool – LANDex – including data from partner initiatives including Prindex, the Land Matrix Initiative (LMI), LandMark and ALLIED, among others.
Additionally, the report includes analysis of political commitments that would contribute to achieving the SDGs, particularly those relating to land. In addition, the report summarizes available official data accessed through the SDG Global Database and reported through the Voluntary National Review (VNR) process.
Furthermore, the report will offer a closer look at the land rights of women in Cameroon, qualitative insights that were gathered through 1 focus group discussions (FGDs). These reflections provide insight into the realities these groups face and conclude with concrete recommendations for the government.
By collecting and integrating these different sources of information, the report intends to support the development of a broader data system that can monitor progress towards people-centered land governance in Cameroon.
The final recommendations reflect outcomes of the FGDs and reflections from the validation session held with the National Land Coalition (NLC). They indicate precise policy improvement to secure tenure rights for all and contribute to the achievement of the SDGs.
