Social Inclusion and Youth
An ILC Asia learning exchange, 29 May - 2 June 2023
Participants from Nepal, India, Kyrgyzstan, Cambodia, Timor Leste, Bangladesh, Thailand and the Philippines started off with a two-day visit to communities spread across Java, Bali and West Nusa Tenggara provinces. They then returned to Denpasar, Bali, reflecting not only on the complexities of agrarian reform issues across Indonesia but also the perseverance of local communities and civil society in the country.

Learning from communities resisting a gold mining operation
Together, more than 60 young people travelled to communities across Java, West Nusa Tenggara and Bali, learning of the struggles faced by a people who have always lived in harmony with their environment.
On this journey we have shared experiences and looked to find solutions, together and in solidarity.
Suyitno is a lifeguard, an entrepreneur, and a land and environmental rights defender from Pancer, East Java Indonesia. He has been fighting to protect the beautiful coral reefs of Pancer from mining operations in the area.
🪸 He shares with us how community-based tourism management is an effective way to make a living independent of mining companies, and how the land he lives on provides him bountiful resources.
Nuraini has been facing an uphill battle against mining companies in Pancer, East Java, Indonesia.
🌿 As a woman, she believes in protecting the land she lives on from ecological damage caused by the mining for the sake of future generations.
