Secure tenure rights for women are a fundamental and non-negotiable aspiration to achieve gender equality and protect women’s human rights. The Generation Equality process, set in motion by UN Women, is hinged on two important deliverables.
"Domestic violence against women in the times of #Covid19 has unfortunately increased sharply. We need to formulate an action plan that protects the safety of women, especially those in rural areas." - Rowshan Moni, ALRD
Firstly, it intends to commemorate, reflect, and fast track the 4th UN Women Conference Commitments made in 1995 in Beijing, China. The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action contains various references related to women's land rights: paragraph 35, 51, 55, 58 (m) and (n), 60 (f), 61 (b), 165 (e), 166 (c), 256 (a) and (f). The states committed to ‘undertake legislative and administrative reforms to give women full and equal access to economic resources, including the right to inheritance and to ownership of land and other property' (Paragraph 61b).
“Women’s land rights demand particular attention. We need to hold our governments accountable to implement policies that protect women's rights.” Sunila Singh, Social Development Foundation
Additionally, the blueprint puts into attention the role that social norms play in the protection of women's land rights, with targets specifically addressing discriminatory norms such as unequal inheritance and the lack of land rights.
